Marrakech — Arrival & the Red City
We meet you at Marrakech airport or your riad. After you settle in, a licensed local guide walks with you through the medina. You see the tall Koutoubia minaret, the painted ceilings of Bahia Palace and the quiet tombs of the Saadian kings. Then you step into the souks — leather, lanterns, spices, carpets — a maze that is easier with someone who knows the way.
In the evening, go to Jemaa el-Fna. The square fills with food stalls, storytellers, Gnawa musicians and fresh juice stands. Take a seat at a café terrace above the square and watch the smoke rise from the grills as the sky turns orange.

Marrakech → Argan Country → Essaouira
After breakfast we drive west across the plains. Halfway, the argan trees begin, and if you are lucky you will see goats standing high in the branches, eating the fruit. We stop at a women's cooperative where you can watch how argan oil is made by hand, from cracking the nut to pressing the oil.
By lunch you are in Essaouira. The wind from the ocean is cool, the walls are white and the doors are blue. Walk along the old Skala ramparts with their bronze cannons, visit the woodworkers who make boxes from thuya wood, and end the day at the port, where fishermen sell sardines straight from the boat and grill them for you.

Essaouira → Atlantic Coast Road → Taghazout → Agadir
This morning is slow. Have breakfast on a rooftop, then drive south along one of the most beautiful coast roads in Morocco. The road climbs over cliffs and drops down to empty beaches. We pass Tamri, with its banana farms, and stop in Taghazout, a small fishing village that is now the surf capital of Morocco. Have lunch by the sea and watch the surfers.
In the afternoon we reach Agadir. Walk on the long sandy beach or rest at your hotel. Before sunset, we drive up to Agadir Oufella, the old kasbah on the hill. The 1960 earthquake destroyed the old town, and these walls are what remains. From the top, you see the whole bay and the city lights.

Agadir → Taroudant → Taliouine → Ouarzazate
Today we leave the ocean and go inland. In Taroudant you walk in the souk inside the red walls. Then the road climbs into the Anti-Atlas, to Taliouine, where you taste saffron tea at a local cooperative and learn how the precious threads are picked by hand.
We continue past Tazenakht, the carpet town, and reach Ouarzazate in the late afternoon. This is the desert gate city, and the home of big film studios. Stop at Kasbah Taourirt, an old palace of the Glaoui family, before dinner at your hotel.

Ouarzazate → Skoura → Valley of Roses → Dades Gorges
A short driving day with lots to see. In the Skoura palm grove, visit the Kasbah Amridil, one of the best kept kasbahs in the south. In Kelaat M'Gouna, smell the rose water made from the famous little pink roses of the valley.
In the afternoon we enter the Dades Gorges. The road twists up between red and orange cliffs, and the view from the top of the bends is one of the classic pictures of Morocco. Take a walk by the river or simply rest at your guesthouse terrace.

Your camel caravan is waiting at the edge of the dunes. Ride into Erg Chebbi as the sun goes down and the sand changes colour every minute. At camp, drink mint tea, eat a big dinner, and listen to Berber drums by the fire. Then step outside and look up.

In the evening we reach Agdz in the Draa Valley. Here, the river is lined with thousands of date palms, and the old kasbahs stand among them. Sleep in a restored kasbah in the palm grove, with the sound of frogs and the smell of the garden.

After lunch, we climb the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), past Berber villages built from the same earth as the mountain. In the evening we come down into Marrakech and drop you at your riad. Eight days, three worlds, one unforgettable road.
