The journey

3 Days Tour Marrakech to Merzouga overview

If you have only three days and you dream of the Sahara, this is the tour for you. It is a round trip from Marrakech to the golden dunes of Merzouga and back, along the most famous roads in the south of Morocco.

On the first day you cross the High Atlas, visit Aït Ben Haddou and sleep in the Dades Valley. On the second day you walk in Todra Gorge and ride a camel into Erg Chebbi for sunset and a night in a desert camp. On the third day you watch the sunrise, then come back to Marrakech through the Draa Valley and the Tizi n'Tichka pass.

The days on the road are long, but the views change every hour, and because the tour is private, you decide when to stop.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 01

Approx. 350 km

Marrakech → High Atlas → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley

Your driver picks you up in Marrakech in the morning, and soon the city is behind you. The road climbs into the High Atlas through walnut trees, red earth villages and long mountain bends. At the Tizi n'Tichka pass you are 2,260 metres high, and the view goes far across the mountains. On the other side, the land becomes dry and wide, and you reach Aït Ben Haddou, the clay ksar listed by UNESCO. Walk across the river and climb up to the old granary at the top.

After lunch, you pass Ouarzazate, the door to the desert and the home of big film studios. Then the road follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the palm grove of Skoura and the Valley of Roses at Kelaat M'Gouna, where the small pink Damask roses are turned into rose water. In the late afternoon you arrive in the Dades Valley, with its red cliffs and green fields. Dinner is a warm tagine at your hotel.

Day 02

Approx. 310 km

Dades Valley → Tinghir → Todra Gorge → Erfoud → Merzouga

After breakfast you drive to Tinghir, a long green oasis full of date palms and old mud villages. A few minutes later the valley closes and you walk into Todra Gorge. The rock walls rise about 300 metres on both sides, and a clear stream runs over the stones at your feet. Climbers hang on the cliffs, and local women wash wool in the water. It is a cool, quiet place before the heat of the desert.

In the afternoon the land opens into the black stony hamada. You pass Erfoud, the town of dates and fossils, and then you see them on the horizon: the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi. In Merzouga your camels are waiting. You ride for about an hour and a half into the sand, while the dunes change from gold to orange to pink. At the camp, the team welcomes you with mint tea, a big dinner and Berber drums under the stars.

Day 03

Approx. 560 km

Merzouga → Rissani → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate → Marrakech

Wake up before the sun and climb the dune behind your tent. The first light comes from Algeria, just a few kilometres away, and the whole erg turns red and gold. Then you ride your camel back to Merzouga for a shower and breakfast. The road passes Rissani, the old caravan city of Sijilmassa and the home of the Alaoui royal family, and then runs west through small oasis towns like Alnif and N'Kob.

Later you follow the Draa Valley, the longest river valley in Morocco, lined with date palms and old kasbahs. After a lunch stop, you pass Ouarzazate and climb the High Atlas once more over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. It is a long day on the road, but the views change all the time. In the evening you come down into Marrakech, and your driver takes you to your riad or hotel.

Frequently asked questions

Is three days enough for the Sahara?

Yes, if your time is short. You see the main highlights and spend one night in the dunes. If you can, choose our 4-day tour for a slower pace.

How long are the drives?

Day 1 and Day 2 are about 5 to 6 hours of driving with stops. Day 3 is the longest, around 9 hours, because Merzouga is far from Marrakech.

Is the tour private?

Yes. Every tour we organise is private. The car, the driver and the plan are only for you and the people you travel with.

Is the camel ride difficult?

No. The camels walk slowly and a camel man leads them. The ride takes about one hour and a half. If you prefer, we can take you to the camp by 4x4.

What is the desert camp like?

It is a Berber-style camp between the dunes of Erg Chebbi. You can choose a standard tent with shared bathrooms or a luxury tent with a private bathroom and a real bed.

When is the best time to go?

October to May is the most comfortable. In summer the days are very hot, so we start early and rest in the afternoon. Winter nights in the desert are cold, so bring a warm layer.
