3 Days Tour from Agadir to Erg Chigaga Desert

3 Days Tour from Agadir to Erg Chigaga Desert — the wild desert most travellers never reach. Cross the Anti-Atlas, drive off-road over a dry lake, and sleep in the biggest dunes in Morocco — far from the crowds.

The journey

3 Days Tour from Agadir to Erg Chigaga Desert overview

Erg Chigaga is the desert people dream about. It is the largest sea of dunes in Morocco, more than 25 kilometres from end to end, and there is no paved road to it. You reach it only by 4x4, over open desert tracks. That is why it feels so quiet and so far away. There are no shops, no cafés and no traffic — only sand, wind and a few nomad families with their camels.

From Agadir, the trip is a real adventure. On the first day you cross the Anti-Atlas mountains through Taroudant, Taliouine and Tazenakht, and you sleep in Foum Zguid, a small oasis town at the edge of the desert. The next day your driver leaves the asphalt. You cross the dry bed of Lake Iriki, a flat white plain that shines like a mirror, and drive into the dunes. In the evening you ride a camel to the top of the sand to watch the sunset.

This tour is private, so the pace is yours. If you want to stop for a long lunch under a tamarisk tree, or spend more time with a nomad family, we can. It is your journey.

Day by day

Day-by-day itinerary

Every departure is private. Desert tracks can change after rain or wind, so your driver may adjust the route on the day.

Day 01

Approx. 380 km

Agadir → Taroudant → Taliouine → Tazenakht → Foum Zguid

We meet you at your hotel in Agadir in the morning. The road follows the green Souss Valley to Taroudant, where we stop for a coffee and a walk along the old red walls. This city is calm and friendly, and the souk is a good place to buy argan oil or silver from local craftsmen.

Then we climb into the Anti-Atlas. In Taliouine, you visit a saffron cooperative and drink tea made with the red threads of the crocus flower. After that, the land becomes dry and wide. We pass Tazenakht, where women weave the bright Ouzguita carpets, and then turn south to Foum Zguid. This little town is the last oasis before the big empty desert. We arrive in the late afternoon. Relax in your guesthouse, eat a warm tagine and go to bed early. Tomorrow, the adventure begins.

Day 02

Approx. 95 km off-road

Foum Zguid → Lake Iriki → Erg Chigaga

After breakfast, your driver lets some air out of the tyres, and you leave the road behind. For the next three hours you drive across the open Sahara. First comes the stony hamada, then sandy tracks, then Lake Iriki. Most of the year it is dry — a huge, flat, white plain where you can see mirages dance on the horizon. After a rainy winter, it can hold water and even birds. Along the way you may see nomad tents and camels. If a family invites you for tea, accept. It is a moment you will not forget.

Slowly the dunes rise in front of you. They are tall, soft and orange, and they go on for kilometres. We have lunch at the camp, and in the afternoon you can rest in the shade or try sandboarding. Before sunset, your camel man takes you up into the dunes. You sit on the top, the wind is soft, and the whole desert turns pink. At night, dinner is served under the stars, and the camp team plays music by the fire.

Day 03

Approx. 470 km

Erg Chigaga → Foum Zguid → Taliouine → Taroudant → Agadir

Wake up before the sun and climb the nearest dune. In Erg Chigaga, sunrise is very quiet. You hear nothing but the sand moving in the wind. After breakfast, we drive back across the desert tracks to Foum Zguid and find the road again.

This is the longest day, but the road is beautiful. We cross the Anti-Atlas again, stop for lunch in Taliouine or Taroudant, and enjoy the green of the Souss Valley after two days of sand. We arrive in Agadir in the evening and drop you at your hotel, with sand in your shoes and the desert in your heart.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Erg Chigaga or Merzouga — which is better?

Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) has higher dunes and is easy to reach by road. Erg Chigaga is bigger, wilder and much quieter, but you need a 4x4. If you love adventure and silence, choose Erg Chigaga.

Is the off-road drive safe?

Yes. Our drivers grew up in the south and drive these tracks every week. The car is a 4x4 with water and a spare tyre, and we only drive in good weather.

Is there electricity and a shower at the camp?

Most camps in Erg Chigaga use solar power. Luxury camps have a private bathroom with a shower. Standard camps have shared bathrooms.

Is day 3 very long?

It is around 8–9 hours with stops. If you want a softer day, we can add one night in Taroudant or extend the tour to 4 days.

Is the tour private?

Yes. All our tours are private — no shared cars and no strangers.
