Every week, our drivers meet travellers with huge suitcases and nothing warm to wear at night. So here is our honest list. It is short, practical and tested in the dunes.
A small bag for the camp
When you ride a camel or a horse to the desert camp, you do not take your big suitcase. It stays safe in the car or at the hotel. So pack a small backpack with what you need for one night: toothbrush, a change of clothes, a warm layer, medicine, phone charger and a power bank.
Clothes
- Layers. The desert can be 30°C at 4 p.m. and 5°C at 4 a.m. A T-shirt, a long-sleeve shirt and a fleece or down jacket will cover every season.
- Long, light trousers. Comfortable for riding camels and horses, and they protect you from the sun.
- A scarf or a shesh. This long cotton scarf protects your face from sun and sand. You can also buy one in Merzouga and your driver will show you how to tie it like a Berber turban.
- Closed shoes and sandals. Walking up a dune is easiest barefoot, but the sand gets very hot in summer and very cold at night.
- A hat and sunglasses. The light in the Sahara is very strong.
Health and comfort
- High-factor sunscreen and lip balm
- Wet wipes and hand gel
- Any personal medicine, plus something for an upset stomach
- A refillable water bottle (we always carry big bottles of water in the car)
- Earplugs, if you are a light sleeper
Small things that make a big difference
- A head torch. Camps have light, but the path between tents is dark — that is why the stars are so bright.
- A zip bag for your phone and camera. Fine sand gets everywhere.
- Some cash in dirhams. For tips, small shops, music in Khamlia and tea with nomads. Cards do not work in the dunes.
- A good book or no book at all. Sometimes the best thing to do in the desert is nothing.
What to wear in villages
Morocco is relaxed with travellers, but in small villages it is respectful to cover shoulders and knees. A light scarf is useful for women visiting mosques from the outside, kasbahs and local homes. Your driver will always tell you if a place has special customs.
“Bring less than you think, and something warmer than you think.”
